WHO WE ARE
A seat at the table for the people solving problems every day.
Small business owners are builders, problem-solvers, employers, innovators, and community members. We understand how to get things done with limited resources, short timelines, tight budgets, and real accountability.
San Diego is stronger when the people who are solving problems every day have a seat at the table.
OUR MISSION
Our mission is to advocate for the inclusion, protection, and support of San Diego's small businesses in local policy, public spending, economic development, and community planning.
Small businesses are not just economic engines — we are part of the fabric of our neighborhoods.
We create jobs. We train people. We support families. We mentor employees. We invest locally. We care about the communities we serve because we live and work here too.
WHY SMALL BUSINESS MATTERS
We operate differently than large corporations.
We do not have unlimited budgets, layers of consultants, or extra padding built into every project. We are used to finding practical solutions, managing people, adapting quickly, and staying accountable. When a small business makes a mistake, the consequences are immediate — payroll to meet, customers to serve, projects to complete, and families depending on us. That creates a mindset focused on results.
EXPERTS IN EFFIECIENCY
Skills built through years of hands-on experience.
These skills are underutilized in government planning, public projects, and community problem-solving. Small business owners know how to:
Stretch limited resources
Build and lead teams
Focus on outcomes
Complete projects on tight timelines
Adapt when problems arise
Make decisions quickly
Manage budgets carefully
Remove unnecessary waste
Stay accountable to customers & employees
INNOVATION STARTS SMALL
Small businesses innovate because we have to.
Many of the best ideas begin with small teams willing to take risks, adapt quickly, and challenge the way things have always been done. We test ideas, adjust quickly, solve problems creatively, and respond to changing conditions in real time.
Innovation is not limited to large tech companies or major institutions. It happens every day in local restaurants, veterinary clinics, construction companies, shops, service businesses, manufacturers, and family-owned businesses throughout San Diego.
Include small business leaders, and the city gains creativity, efficiency, and practical solutions.
WE ARE COMMUNITY
Boots on the ground.
We know what residents are experiencing because we work directly with them every day — the cost of living, hiring challenges, permitting delays, public safety concerns, homelessness, construction issues, and the daily realities of running a business in San Diego. Unlike large outside corporations, we are deeply connected to the neighborhoods we serve.
RESPONSIBLE USE OF TAXPAYER DOLLARS
The goal isn't to spend money. It's to solve problems.
Billions may be allocated toward major public challenges, yet residents often see limited results — too much lost through excessive administration, layers of consultants, inflated contracts, and inefficient systems.
The Coalition supports transparency, accountability, competitive bidding, measurable outcomes, and more involvement from people with real operational experience.
Small business owners can help identify waste, streamline systems, and improve results.
FAIR TREATMENT
Not special treatment — a fair chance.
Too often, large corporations receive major tax credits, incentives, and public contracts while small businesses carry heavy tax burdens and rising costs. San Diego should not only attract large corporations — it should protect and grow the local businesses that already serve this city. We support:
Local-first contracting opportunities
Simplified procurement processes
Reduced red tape
Transparency around public incentives
Small-business set-asides
Faster government payment timelines
Tax fairness
A stronger voice in policy decisions
LADDERS OF OPPORTUNITY
Often someone's first job — and first chance to move up.
Small businesses give people their first job, first leadership role, first chance to learn a trade, or first path toward entrepreneurship. We train employees. We mentor young workers. We help people build confidence, skills, and careers.
When small businesses thrive, more local people have a chance to move up.
Supporting small businesses isn't just about protecting owners — it's about strengthening families, workers, neighborhoods, and the local economy.
OUR PRIORITIES
Seven commitments for a stronger San Diego.
OUR MESSAGE TO SAN DIEGO
We are not asking for special treatment. We are asking for fair treatment — to be included, and for government to recognize the value of people who are already building solutions every day.
San Diego's future should be shaped not only by large corporations, consultants, and institutions — but by the local business owners who know this city, serve this city, and believe in this city.
Join the Coalition
If you are a small business owner, employee, community member, or resident who believes local businesses deserve a stronger voice, we invite you to join us. Together, we can advocate for a San Diego that supports local businesses, uses taxpayer dollars wisely, creates opportunity, and builds stronger communities.
